Groucho Marx Reading Quote
American comedian Groucho Marx
"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read."
I've always loved this Groucho Marx quote. I first heard it many years ago but have just done a bit of research and found that the quote was first attributed to Groucho Marx in a 1974 museum exhibit about books and reading.
But it seems that the quote actually first appeared in an issue of a magazine called Boys' Life in 1954 where it was sent in by someone else, with no mention of Groucho Marx.
So I guess the possibilities are that Groucho read it in the magazine and used it or that he said it first sometime before 1954 but that it wasn't widely known until the museum exhibit in 1974.
Groucho was born in 1890 and died in 1977 so either is possible.
Anyway, it's a great quote!
